George's avatar Forum Moderators Wanted. Revenue Sharing.
Discuss this in our forums

Hi everyone,
We are looking for admins/moderators for our forum with revenue sharing. It means that moderators will have their Google, MSN or other providers ads displayed on our forum. Any clicks will be credited to your Google account and not ours. Rules and conditions are not finalized yet so it’s apen to suggestions.

We also working on user referal reward program. See the following thread for details: http://www.tutorial-index.com/forums/viewthread/111/

We are looking for someone to moderate and may be help us build the forum (monetary reward will be considered for those who decide to help us build the forum). The forum moved to a new platform, so old design gone together with the old code. If you can help to choose a good design it would be very much appreciated. We’ll do the coding on the backend.

Our traffic is 2000-3000 unique visitors daily and our engines index 10-20 new tutorials every day.

We have all kinds of tutorials, but majority of traffic coming looking for graphic design, animation, image editing tutorials.

The revenue sharing is not new and each site implements the idea differently. Here is what we think may work for our forum (still in the discussion stage, so your opinion will be greatly appreciated).

- Each forum page will have three text/banner ad blocks. One or two blocks will belong to administrators. Unclaimed ad blocks will belong to Tutorial-Index.com
- Since we may have more then one moderator in the forum and only one ad block that belongs to moderators, it will be rotated between them on daily bases and the rotation frequency will depend on amount of posts that belong to a moderator. For example: moderator A has 30 posts and moderator B has 10 posts, so moderator A will have his ads displayed 3 days in a row while moderator B posts will be displayed only 1 day.
- Since we have multiple tutorial topics like image editing tutorials and programming tutorials, we may have multiple forums. Moderators from images editing forums will be in the different rules pool then those who moderate programming forums, meaning that ads belonging to Image forum moderators will not be displayed on Programming forums and vice versa

George's avatar Dead tutorials module added

Posted by George

Today we released a new module that removes tutorials from websites that went dead. It works similar to algorithm used by search engines. If within a few month period a website does not show a signs of life or displays generic junk search page its URL is flagged for removal from our database.

How many tutorials show up dead in the first 2 runs since our testing begin? To our surprise - 20%. Are they really dead? Yes. Before the module went live we were testing it for nearly a month. Reliability? 99.9%.

The module idea came after I got frustrated when looking for some Photoshop tutorial just to discover that half of the links that showed up on the search page were dead. As a result we assumed that most users have the same frustration when searching through our index.

So, now you can enjoy better experience with our website that has almost no dead links except those that went out of business for the last month or two.
Any comments?

George's avatar t-i Moved to New Server

Posted by George

I believe everybody noticed that tutorial-index became much faster. We finally moved to a new server. Even to our surprise the move was pretty smooth. Not a single hiccup. It took 3 hours to move the code and the database and 2 hours for DNS changes for North American routing servers. Unfortunately, we did not have resources to check how long it took for changes to reach Chinese servers but we assume they didn’t care anyway grin . So everybody, enjoy the new ride.

George's avatar Ad payment module is back

Posted by George

Finally got our hands on ads payment module which was dead for the last month due to our changes to the new system. As anything else on the site it was redesigned and recoded from scratch. We tested it as deep as possible and it looks fine to us. But real life will show. Ok, time to relax now. Let’s go fishing. We have a nice fish up here next to nuclear station. It’s glowing at night and tastes funny but otherwise looks like fish. Take care everyone. cool smile

George's avatar TopSites Redesigned and Recoded

Posted by George

Topsites got redesigned today. We introduced new rules to it and new features. Now everyone can post their website on the TopSites and it’s going to be ranked by how popular it is among the Internet folks. It’s not necessary any more to have our reciprocal banner in order to count inbound referrals. So get wild. You can find rules on the FAQ page. But we still require the site’s subject to be connected to tutorials and we do not allow tutorial indexes in there as it’s going to defeat the purpose of the idea.
