As noted previously, Microsoft now considers email a core capability of its Office suite--a basic feature that customers simply expect--and of course that functionality is provided by Microsoft Outlook. In Office 2010, Outlook has been significantly overhauled, most obviously with the ribbon UI, which is now pervasive throughout the application.

It‘s getting closer. SharePoint 2010 that is. And now that the dates are all out in the open, Microsoft is offering us information to get our infrastructure ready.

As a writer, I spend a lot of time in Microsoft Word, and it‘s one of those applications that has matured to the point where there really isn‘t a lot you can do to improve the experience. In Office 2007, of course, Microsoft added the ribbon UI to Word, dramatically improving the exposure of pre-existing features. In fact, the Word ribbon was so successful that I‘m sure many people believed that Microsoft had added significant new functionality to the product when, in fact, it had not.

o I shouldn’t be diverting from my blogs covering Online Reporting to Parents but a quick trawl of twitter before I call it a night has me thinking of SharePoint and Office 2010. This is in production and a public beta looks likely at the end of the year but the blogosphere is claiming Beta 1 will be announced on Monday at the Partner Conference.

I recall people mocking PowerPoint at the community college I worked at 15 years ago--as in, "those who can‘t do, PowerPoint"--but Microsoft‘s presentation solution has emerged as a powerful force in both corporate settings and in education. I begrudgingly began using PowerPoint myself several years ago when I started providing my own presentations, and while I hardly consider myself an expert, it‘s an application I do use fairly regularly. In PowerPoint 2010, the major improvements are of the evolutionary variety, but there‘s a lot of emphasis this time around on creating even more professional-looking presentations, and I think that will go over well with the application‘s core audiences.

It‘s a challenge anyone in the movie industry can probably relate to: How do you follow-up an absolute, no-holds-barred, smash? And that issue, too, is most likely the impetus behind Microsoft‘s surprisingly funny Office 2010: The Movie promotion, in which the company is touting its upcoming office productivity suite as if it were a Hollywood summer blockbuster. Office 2010, following hot on the heels of Office 2007 (see my review), has a lot to live up to. And now that we‘ve pretty much gotten over the innovative but jarring ribbon UI--it‘s been formally added to virtually all Office applications and services now--there‘s only one question remaining, and in the context of Microsoft Office, it‘s sort of a classic: How, exactly, do you improve on a product line that is as mature and full-featured as Office?

When you finally do click on the Office Button, you’ll see something that you probably didn’t expect. Instead of a menu, or even a Ribbon tab, you’ll see the new Microsoft Office Backstage View.
